BECOMING A NEW MEMBER OF THE WINSTON-SALEM RC CLUB

First, let us say that the WSRC Club is always happy to have new members and we think you will not find a more welcoming group of radio-controlled aviation enthusiasts or a more talented and skilled group of pilots anywhere. Just like any club or organization, we know that your expectations are high, but what should you expect from your new club and what should your new club expect from you?

If you are new to RC aviation and you do not already know how to fly, we want you to contact one of our instructors to help you learn. Our instructors are listed on the main page of this website. One way to contact them is to come to the flying field and ask to meet one or more of them. The best time is usually on a weekend. Have a conversation with them and find out when you can come meet with them again to start instruction. You will likely be given a copy of our rules, possibly an application too. You will likely be told about the AMA or the Academy of Model Aeronautics and the Introductory Pilot Program. It is important to read and understand our club rules as well as the Safety Rules of the AMA.

Joining WSRC and approval of your application as a prospective pilot does not mean you automatically have flying privileges. Before you can fly by yourself, you must first complete your training under the AMA Introductory Pilot Program with one of our instructors. When that takes place is up to you and your instructor.

If you already know how to fly, have been a member of another club, just moved to the area or just want to renew your interest in model aviation, no matter the reason, we welcome you. However, to fly at our field you must be a current member of the AMA, you must read and understand our club rules and adhere to the AMA safety guideline as well as those of WSRC. You must also demonstrate your ability to safely fly your aircraft and that it be witnessed by one or more of our instructors, officers or members of the Board of Directors. Instructors, officers and Board members are listed on the main page of this website. You must complete your application and pay dues to become a member.

You can expect to receive word from our treasurer or another officer that your application has been approved in a matter of a few days. Once that happens, you are free to use the field and facilities as often as you wish without being accompanied by a member. You are a member!

Expect to be placed on a group email list soon after you join. WSRC uses email to communicate with members as a group. This is your official notification of events and other items of interest. Please keep your email address current by notifying our treasurer of an email address change. Please consider attending our monthly meetings which are held at the library in Clemmons on the first Thursday of each month.

We want everyone to be safe and enjoy the time spent at the field. To do that we all go by the same set of rules and they apply to everyone. If you have questions, ask. Chances are good there is someone at the field that can help answer your questions.
